Difficult Decisions

The other most used phrases I hear as a pet euthanasia specialist are “I wish she would just go in her sleep” or “how do I know when it’s time to say goodbye?”. These thoughts trouble many pet owners minds for a long time before contacting us when old age or disease is creeping up on their most loved companion. Feelings of fear, guilt and anguish are what my clients share with me the most when I am called out to their home as a home visit vet specialising in comfort care and peaceful pet goodbyes.

Many pet owners hope their beloved companion will pass peacefully in their sleep, at home in their own bed. While this is something we all wish for, it sadly happens only rarely – and often not until an unfair amount of suffering has taken place. Just like humans, pets nearing the end of their lives require attentive hospice care, comfort, and medication, such as morphine, to keep them pain-free.

A Better Way to Help

For years and years, I have been wishing for a way to better help and guide pet owners to recognise pain and suffering in their beloved dog, cat or other much-loved family pet nearing that dreaded time – the end of your pet’s life. Pain, especially chronic on-going pain, is very hard to detect in an animal. Many of my vet colleagues don’t recognise this because they see your pet in a busy clinic and your pet is often extra “perky” and as alert as can be due to all the nerves and adrenaline masking how they really feel. This pain we see much more clearly when they are relaxed at home.

In Home Pet-Euthanasia

We also fully support owners who prefer a more natural approach and do not wish to give extensive medication or chemical treatments to their pets. We understand that some pet parents may also find it difficult to administer medication to an elderly, anxious, or uncooperative companion – especially in the case of cats.
